Sør-Østerdal Slektshistorielag - a genealogical organisation

Sør-Østerdal Slektshistorielag was founded 1. of May 1991 and is a free organisation with more than 200 members.

Many members have a significant competence in genealogy, so both the beginners and they who have been doing genealogy for some years, can get help they need.

The aim for Sør-Østerdal Slektshistorielag is to initiate and motivate the search for ancestry in the old Sør-Østerdal Sorenskriverembete (magistrate aerea), which is Engerdal, Elverum, Stor-Elvdal, Trysil and Åmot – in Hedmark county (fylke). We also include Rendalen in our work.

A task that is highly valuated is the registration of church-books and other genealogy sources. So far the oldest church-books for Elverum have been stored in a database based on the program BD87.

The organization answers many questions about ancestors in Sør-Østerdal.

The organization is also working to take care of old sources by copying and making archives and write the part of bygdeboka (the farm- and genealogy history) for the east and central part of Elverum.

Tjukke Slekta is our magazine which is coming out with several numbers every year. The magazine contains mostly articles, but also questions and answers about ancestors in Sør-Østerdalen, information about meetings, what we can offer for sale, names and addresses.

Meetings for members (and non-members) are held in the library in Elverum, every other Wednesday (from September to May).

Relevant themes are discussed and you can get help to search in the library and the archive, in documents, on micro-cards,

digitals databases and on internet.

Meetings in our office at Lundgaard in Elverum mean that you can search in the archive, speak with other genealogists and work in prior projects in the organization.

Why genealogy?

Genealogy is searching for your ancestors or relatives. Whether you want to go to the recent or to more distant history,

genealogy will give you a challenging hobby.

The most recommended way to start is to ask elder relatives, and from there read historical books written about ancestors.

This can give you a key to go further. A good help is censuses.

Census for the entire country of  Norway you can find in 1801, 1865, 1875 and 1900. You will find them in the national Archives

and on the internet: www.digitalarkivet.no Here you can find where the people are born and when. The place and dates of birth

can be useful for further research.

The most church-books do go back to 1750 and are possible to look into on the State Archives. They contain baptism, confirmation,

marriage and funeral. Many organizations have copied the church-books, so they can be easier to read.

Other sources of genealogy can describe how people lived. Probate record books and Court proceedings and protocols can give really

good descriptions of how people lived many years ago.

Genealogy will soon become more than a hobby. Before you are aware of it you will have thoughts about family reunions, a genealogy

pedigree chart and a book of ancestors.

Velcome in the family!
